Databases, Data models and Applications:

The modern ArcGIS architecture provides access to many different kinds of relational databases. All spatial data are stored inside the database. We call it the GeoDataBase. There are GDBs for the enterprise level, for groups of about 10 units and the personal GDB, all handled within a professional RDBMS.

For high-speed access and to avoid database management ArcGIS can also handle file based GDBs.
